A plain glass or metal pendant lights a room. A woven one lights the ceiling as well, and that is the difference I care about. The rattan or raffia breaks the bulb into dozens of small points and throws a loose pattern over the plaster, so even an ordinary room starts to look lived in after dark.

Scale is everything

Woven shades look smaller hanging than they do in a photograph. The two Lola pendants are 80cm across, which sounds enormous and is about right over a dining table or in a room with a high ceiling. In a low cottage room the 42cm or 50cm shades are kinder. Hang a pendant over a table so the bottom sits roughly 70cm above the top, low enough that the light pools on the wood rather than in your eyes.

Keep it as one layer of several

A woven pendant is atmosphere, not task light. I always pair one with a lamp or two at sitting height, and the light from both is warmer for it. I wrote about that balance in how to light a room, and the same thinking runs through a dining room that is not a dining set.

Two of these, the Dankia and the Alaya, are sold without a cable or electrics. That is common with woven shades and not a problem, but it is worth knowing before the box arrives.
