Velvet and Bouclé Armchairs
Six soft armchairs, five in velvet and one in blue bouclé for contrast. From €389 to €999, chosen for how they sit in low, warm light.

Velvet is the fabric that does the most in low light. The pile catches a lamp from one side and falls into shadow on the other, so even a plain chair in a single colour looks modelled and soft. Nothing flat-woven does that.
I look for a chair with curves: rounded arms, a back that wraps a little, a seat you sink into rather than perch on. In a warm, dark room the shapes matter as much as the fabric, because by evening you see outlines more than detail. If you want the pile without much shine, the Bellagio is the one in a matt velvet.
One that is not velvet
I have included one chair that breaks the rule. The Sofia is in a blue bouclé, and it earns its place for the same reason velvet does: texture that holds the light. If bouclé is the direction you are leaning, I wrote a separate guide on how to choose a bouclé armchair.
Where to put it
An armchair wants a lamp and a small table within reach, or it becomes a place to drop coats. Angle it towards the room rather than flat against a wall, and let it be a different colour from the sofa. A deep blue or ochre velvet against a cream or brown sofa is about as much contrast as this kind of room needs. I used the same idea in a warm, dark living room under €1,500.
Common questions
- Does a blue chair work in a warm room?
- Yes, if it is deep enough. A Prussian or peacock blue holds its own against browns, ochre and terracotta and keeps a room of warm colours from going flat. One blue chair is plenty.
- Can the covers come off?
- On some of them. The Neo Chiquito's covers come off completely and the Bellagio's cushions are removable. The Séméon and the Nidou are not removable, and the Berti, Neo Chiquito and Nidou are dry clean only.
- Will these ship to me?
- Five come from La Redoute's Dutch shop and the Sofia from Westwing's Dutch shop. Both deliver in the Netherlands. Each piece says where it ships before you click.
